Katie Spotz

Katie SpotzOhio's 22-year-old Katie Spotz was virtually unknown when she decided to embark on her mission to set a world record as the youngest person to row solo across an ocean and in doing so, increase awareness of the world water crisis (lack of clean drinking water). The 70-day event, Row for Water, featured the endurance athlete's solo journey across the Atlantic Ocean from Africa to South America in a self-contained ocean row boat. Her goal was to raise $30,000 for Blue Planet Network, enough to provide clean drinking water for life for 1,000 people.

With the help of Yopko Penhallurick, Spotz focused on two key public relations objectives surrounding her row: to generate interest in following her journey and website, RowforWater.com; and to raise funds and increase awareness for Blue Planet Network.

As a result of media relations activities, website promotions, blog entries, social media postings, Flickr photo uploads, marine tracking efforts, creation of online donation mechanisms, planning of multiple events, and post-row media coverage coordination, these objectives were not only met, but exceeded. Spotz surpassed her fundraising goal raising over $100,000, had a blog traffic increase of 1,804 percent, received coverage in over 150 media outlets worldwide, and engaged an audience from 166 countries through RowforWater.com.

Following her record-setting row, Spotz has continued to generate media attention, gain supporters and increase the avid following of the cause she represents. Spotz has spoken at the United Nations Youth Council, as well as schools around the country, and she was named one of Glamour magazine's Women of the Year for 2010.
